What can one do in Hämeenkangas?
Walk on Marked Trails
The undemanding terrain in the Hämeenkangas area offers hikers the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in summer as well as in winter. The trail network is tens of kilometres long and has many lean-to shelters and campfire huts along it. There area's trails intersect at many points and its good to have an outdoor map with you to help keep your way.
Go Wilderness Trekking
There are enough marked trails in the area for a treks lasting one whole day or possibly even two days. All the area's trails are not circle trails and hikers will have to trek back and forth along some trails. Hikers may stay overnight in their own tents, in lean-to shelters, at the area's hotel or at the Jämi aviation and tourist centre.
See the Sights and Scenery
- The view, which opens from the top of the look-out tower near Jämi aviation and tourist centre, is magnificent. The tower is not maintained by Metsähallitus.
- Koivistonvati is a gorgeous suppa depression. The best view of it is from Koivistonvati cooking shelter on the edge of the depression.

Walk on Nature Trail
There are two nature trails with information boards in Hämeenkangas. The Forest Research Institute's nature trail features forest research. The Vaarinnevankeidas Nature Trail is situated on privately owned land and features mire nature and the area's history.
Ski Cross-country on Maintained Trails
There is an exceptionally good amount of snow in the Hämeenkangas upland through the entire winter. The first snow often falls as early as November and there is enough snow for skiing through April. The landscape is ridge filled so there are large changes in altitude and it is well suited for cross-country skiing. The ski trail network in Hämeenkangas is made up of over 100 km of trails.
Go Ski Trekking
As there is a vast network of ski trails within Hämeenkangas it is possible to take overnight ski treks. Skiers can stay overnight in their own tents, in lean-to shelter, in the area's hotel or at the aviation and tourist centre.
Go Cycling
The Hämeenkangas area's firm ground and changes in altitude make it an excellent mountain biking destination. Many different types of roads and trails crisscross the area. Additionally two national cycling routes cross the area.
Go Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is allowed on roads and trails marked on the Hämeenkangas outdoor map as riding tracks.
Go Berry and Mushroom Picking
Picking berries and mushrooms are Everyman's Rights in Hämeenkangas taking into account restrictions set by the military. The most common finds in the heathland forests are the Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and the Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea).
Go Swimming
There is a public swimming pool managed by SF-Caravan Satakunta ry at Kuninkaanlähde.
