Directions to Punkaharju Nature Reserve
Punkaharju is located along public transport routes and it is easy to reach by water or car.
Punkaharju is located along Highway 14, 30 km from Savonlinna and 90 km from Imatra. Helsinki is 370 km away.
By Train to Punkaharju
The train (vr.fi) stops several times a day at the Punkaharju parish village, Retretti and Lusto stops. The Lusto and Retretti stops are located near the nature reserve, at the western end of the esker and a few hundred metres from the nearest trails and services.
To the Hiking Trails
The starting points of the Punkaharju hiking trails are located around the nature reserve and the research park. The area is small and the starting points are within walking or biking distance from each other. Starting points for the hiking trails.
By Bus to Punkaharju
Buses (matkahuolto.fi) run regularly from both Savonlinna and Imatra.
By Boat to Punkaharju
It is easy to reach Punkaharju by boat from both Pihlajavesi and Puruvesi. Services for boaters provide more detailed information on, for example, guest boat moorings.
By Cruise Boat
It is also possible to travel to Punkaharju on a traditional steamboat from the town of Savonlinna. For more information see the cooperation partners section.
By Car to Punkaharju
Highway 14 passes near Punkaharju. There are signs from the road to the old Harjutie road (road 4792), which runs the length of the entire nature reserve through magnificent landscapes. There are plenty of parking areas in the area, including:
Kuikonniemi parking area, Harjutie 223, Savonlinna (road 4792). Space for approximately 12 cars. During winter maintenance, the parking area may be smaller.
Tutkimuspuisto (Research Park) parking area, Puistometsäntie 14 (turnoff from road 14). Space for approximately 20 cars. During winter maintenance, the parking area may be smaller.
Parking can also be found in Lusto, among others.
