Directions to Arctic Circle Hiking Area
Arctic Circle Hiking Area is located in the municipality of Rovaniemi, about 25 km north of the city of Rovaniemi on the east-side of the road running between Rovaniemi and Sodankylä.
The airport and train station are located in Rovaniemi.
Starting Points for Excursions
The main starting points for excursions are at Vikaköngäs and Vaattunkiköngäs. The Makialampi parking area is situated at the Vaattunkiköngäs crossroads. From the parking area, you can also access the local trails.
By Bus
There are several buses (matkahuolto.fi) which travel daily between Rovaniemi and Sodankylä as well as Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi. Buses operate along Highway 4.
The closest bus stop is at Lake Vikajärvi. The Vikaköngäs starting point is 200 metres from the bus stop.
The Makialampi parking area is situated by Highway 4. From the parking area you can set off on the local trails. The Vaattunkiköngäs starting point is about 2,3 km away.
By Train
By train (vr.fi) you can get to the train station in the city center of Rovaniemi, which is about 25 km from the Arctic Circle Hiking Area.
By Car
You arrive at the Arctic Circle Hiking Area via Highway 4 (E75), from where there are signposts to the starting points of the trails.
Vaattunkiköngäs parking area, Vaattunkikönkääntie 219, 96900 Vikajärvi. Winter maintenance. Space for about 40 cars.
Makialampi parking area is situated by Highway 4 near the crossroads of Vaattunkikönkääntie road. Winter maintenance. Space for about 15 cars.
Vikaköngäs parking area, Sodankyläntie 2508, 97510 Rovaniemi. The parking area is accessed from Highway 4 (E75), near the village of Vikajärvi. Winter maintenance. In winter, there is space for 10-15 cars. Along the plowed road leading to a lean-to shelter area there are 3 parking areas, where there is no winter maintenance.
In summer, there is parking space for about 40-50 cars.
