The sauna at the Hannukuru campsite in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and half of the open wilderness hut will be closed for mid-winter to save on firewood costs. The campfire hut in Hannukuru will be closed completely in December due to its poor condition.
The sauna and half of the open wilderness hut in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park’s Hannukuru campsite will be closed from 1 December 2024 to 28 February 2025. In addition, the campfire hut in Hannukuru will be closed permanently on 1 December due to its poor condition. The Hannukuru campsite is part of the popular Hetta-Pallas hiking trail.
The goal of the temporary closure of the sauna is to save on firewood costs. The Hannukuru sauna serves as a pilot site for Metsähallitus’s planned cost savings. Its temporary closure is used to monitor how much the closure will save on firewood costs and how it will affect the fees charged for using the sauna.
One half of the Hannukuru open wilderness hut will also be temporarily closed due to firewood costs. There are considerably fewer hikers and sauna users in mid-winter than in other seasons. Relatively large amounts of firewood are still used when the sauna and the hut cool down between uses and are heated again.
“The half of the open wilderness hut that will remain in use can accommodate 16 people, which is a good number of visitors. The half that will remain in use will be easier to keep warm, as everyone staying in the wilderness hut will use the same fireplace”, says Jarmo Asell, Product Owner at National Parks Finland.
In addition to the other end of the hut, you can also still stay in the Hannukuru reservable hut. The new reservation and rental hut sales system will be introduced on 19 November 2024. Bookings for huts for the rest of 2024 should be made no later than 18 November 2024. Hut reservations for 2025 will be made in the new service from 26 November 2024 onward starting at 9 a.m. Read more: eraluvat.fi.
The campfire hut in Hannukuru will be closed permanently
The campfire hut at the Hannukuru campsite will be closed permanently as of 1 December 2024 due to its poor condition. The well at the campsite has already been closed earlier this year, as the water is not clean enough to use.
“The campfirehut will be closed because it is in poor condition and is coming to the end of its life cycle. It will be safe to make fire even after the hut has been closed, as there are many other campfire sites at the Hannukuru campsite”, says Sami Lapinniemi, Field Supervisor at National Parks Finland.
